If you have followed the plethora of chaotic news that has been coming out in the past week centered around politics, then you might have heard on Tuesday’s “Save The Republic” rally when Republican Representative Miller from Illinois quoted Hitler stating he was “right about one thing”, to get the point across about the importance of educating our children. After receiving obvious large amounts of backlash, Rep. Miller tweeted saying, “Congresswoman Miller’s statement was a denunciation of evil dictators’ efforts to re-educate young people and similar efforts by left-wing radicals in our country today.” Since this, many have pondered that there are copious amounts of good people to quote about education, rather than Hitler. Well, fear not Rep. Miller, for I have compiled a list of many others you could’ve/can use.
“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today” - Malcolm X.
“Educating all of our children must be one of our most urgent priorities. Well know that education, more than anything else, improves our chances of building better lives.”-Nelson Mandela.
“Children must be taught how to think, not what to think.” -Margaret Mead.
“Education breeds confidence. Confidence breeds hope. Hope breeds peace.”-Confucius.
“One child, one teacher, one book, and one pen, can change the world.”-Malala Yousafzai.
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” -Nelson Mandela.
“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”-W.B. Yeats.
“It is greater work to educate a child, in the true and larger sense of the world, than to rule a state.”-William Ellery Channing.
“What we instill in our children will be the foundation upon which they build their future.”-Steve Maraboli.
“Our greatest natural resource is in the minds of our children.”-Walt Disney.
“The future of our world lies in the hands, the hearts, and the minds of our children.”-David Decker.
“I believe that children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way. Show them all the beauty they possess inside.”-Whitney Houston.
“To educate a child is to turn walls into doors”- Unknown.
“Kids don’t remember what you try to teach them. They remember what you are.” Jim Henson.
“When educating the minds of the youth, we must not forget to educate their hearts.”-Dalai Lama.
“Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it.”-Marian Wright Edelman.
“The main hope of a nation lies in the proper education of its youth.”-Erasmus.
“The foundation of every state is the education of its youth”-Diogenes.
“Teach the youth to speak the truth, show them what peace can do.”-Rakim.
“The future belongs to young people with an education and the imagination to create.”-Barack Obama.
In conclusion, all it takes is a simple google search of “inspiring quotes about educating the youth” to find these, as well as many other quotes to use over referencing one of the most hateful men to walk this Earth. In the past few weeks it seems as though anti-Semites feel braver than ever about being outward on their hatred to minority groups. With the recent storming of the Capitol, there have been Proud Boys wearing shirts that don phrases such as “6MWE”, which stands for stands for “six million wasn’t enough”, in referencing the number of Jewish people killed due to the Holocaust, as well as another one wearing a “Camp Auschwitz” T-shirt. Besides the Proud Boys, other forms of anti-Semitism was through the presence of QAnon members, who believe Jews make up Satanic wealthy families that keep the world corrupt and target Donald Trump, their true “savior”. In addition to this, the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York was discovered on Friday to have a Confederate flag tied to the front door of it.
So, Representative Miller, by quoting Hitler, you are enabling the confidence and gal of these hateful groups to run amok and boldly express their hate. By deflecting in your apology and blaming the left, as you Republicans seem to always do, you show an open refusal to condemn the actions of hatred. With the utter ease it took to find many other people to reference in your speech, other than Hitler, one may wonder how you could so cluelessly choose this. Maybe some of the people listed above are too diverse and “progessive” to fit your old worn out and whitewashed rhetoric, but your downright refusal to try speaks volumes that we will not forget.
