No, Jesus Would Not Be a Trump Supporter

Though the separation between church and state has been prominent since Thomas Jefferson coined the term in 1802 as, “the wall of separation between Church and State”, many political figures to this day cannot help but use their religious upbringing and personal morals to govern their decisions. Even moreso, it has led to their supporters putting them on a pedestal, almost in a Godlike manner.

With the vast divide in politics since Donald Trump has been president, we have seen a niche way of supporters getting their point across that they adore the 45th leader of this country. Not only have we seen the rise in bright pink “Women for Trump” flags being waved, bumper stickers that state “LGBT” stands for “Liberty, Guns, Beer, Trump”, and even babies who cannot even form a sentence, yet have already been declared a conservative by their doting parents who must Instagram a picture of their newborn wearing an “adorable deplorable”, or a “MAGA” onesie, perhaps the strangest form of support is the rise of comparisons of Trump to Jesus Christ. Even more strange being flags flown claiming that Jesus would be a Trump supporter.

However, many believe that Jesus, being a poor, Jewish, Middle Eastern, migrant, would be denounced by modern Trump supporters, were he alive in this day and age. While if we were to get all into the minor details, Jesus would most likely not support any sort of modern politics, because the constant corruption, lies, mudslinging, and general divide of the people it causes goes against the genuine belief system Jesus preached, as well as the Commandments (Thou shall not lie, Thou shall not commit adultery, etc).

Though many think that because of Trump’s loud pro life views, it would be enough to win Jesus’ big stamp of approval, it does not wipe out the fact that there are many other aspects about Trump and his supporters that may rub “JC” the wrong way. For starters, in Matthew 19:24, Jesus states that it is easier for a camel to fit through the eye of a sewing needle than it is for a rich person to enter heaven. Now, does this mean that anyone with a large bank account is destined to be sent to Hell? Most likely no. That’s the thing about the Bible, many of the verses are meant to be interpreted and read between the lines. What Jesus may mean is that anyone who hoards and flashes mass amounts of money, and does not give back, is not living by the example Jesus wanted. Need I remind you that Jesus lived his life as a poor man. Many may say that Trump does care about the poor, and helps many people, however his tax cuts for his wealthy colleagues made them richer and favor them over the average worker, pushing down on policies to exploit immigrant workers, slashed welfare, and many other acts may show differently.

Going back to the Ten Commandments let’s go take a look at good old number seven, “Thou shall not commit adultery”. Though it seems Trump supporters brush under the rug the multitude of times Trump has made uncomfortable advances at women, had ties to Epstein and the “Lolita Express”, and the multitude of scandals in which he has cheated on his wives, they will also take any opportunity to tease Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky all while supporting a man who hasn’t done any different. Personally, I don’t think Jesus would love the dismay of monogamy, but shall we continue? In Matthew 18:9, Jesus stated that if your eyes are causing you to sin, gouge them out. Though in 2021, women are saying Time’s Up to the treatment they have been put through, it doesn’t cancel out the apparent slut shaming many, especially Trump supporters, throw towards many women who disagree with them. It also seems as though this statement made by Jesus is so overlooked in many religious institutes in general. Many are quick to shame the woman, and what she wears, when Jesus himself suggests to pluck your eye out before gawking over what a woman wears.

If you’re still following, it is now time to touch upon migrants. Aside from Jesus being an immigrant himself, there are many other stories in the Bible that account for the journey of prophets, and followers, migrating for safety. Moses, Ruth, and the disciples were all migrants at one point or another in their time. Whether they left in search of new land, or fled from violence, it was all through the hands of God. Today, many who come to this country out of fear of their safety in the place they were originally from are thrown in cages, separated from their families, generalized into a box of being called nothing but “rapist drug lords” per the words of President Trump, and when they come in are general unwelcomed with closed arms belonging to his supporters. Jesus, on the other hand, believed in loving thy neighbors, and was a refugee himself. His parents had to flee to seek asylum in Egypt to protect him, though it seems to be another aspect that religious Trump supporters seem to skim over.

While I’m certainly not stating that Jesus would be a Biden supporter, or affiliate with any political party, the point is that to put a man clearly as corrupt and far from Jesus’ example as Trump and make weird fan art of him and Jesus side by side, claim that Trump was “sent by God”, or even to compare the two in the slightest is not only so far off base and out of touch, but disrespectful to the true person Jesus was. To affiliate Jesus with any sort of political figure is a downright comparison that can’t be made, because corruption of people goes against everything Jesus preached. Taking this point even further, if Jesus was alive in this day and age in his true form, a poor Jewish Middle Eastern immigrant man, Trump supporters would denounce his very existence, and enforce policies that would send him out of this country. With there being many other examples of Trump doing ungodly things, such as inciting violence, utter hypocrisy, encouraging a divide of the people, and always being power hungry and wanting to be idolized, despite idolatry being a clear sin. Even things such as flashing wealth, or needing to sound an alarm and be praised every time you do the slightest of a good deed, is denounced in Matthew 6:2, which states “Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the. synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory”. Though he has been voted out, his utter refusal to leave, and encouragement of violence at the Capitol Building protests at the hands of his supporters, shows more and more of an ugly side to the very folks who claim to bow at the feet of Jesus, a man who would not stand for Trump.
