Feminism, according to Google, is defined as “the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes.” The first part of the definition, “the advocacy of women’s rights”, is a widely accepted definition of the word. However, Americans tend to leave out the second part of the definition, making the definition seem only preferential to women. This in turn makes “feminists”, believers of the definition, seem sexist as well. It’s quite easy to believe the word only puts pedestals on women and downgrades men, just because the word itself does not include a derivation of the word “male.”
Let us also take a look at another word/phrase that is too often taken out of context. Radical feminism, according to Wikipedia, is “a perspective within feminism that calls for a radical reordering of society in which male supremacy is eliminated in all social and economic contexts.” The term “radical feminist” is often used as an insult to women who seem to be downgrading all aspects of men. Similarly, the word “radical” is often associated with one who is crazy, because of their extreme views. The definition of radical, according to Merriam-Webster, is “favoring extreme changes in existing views, habits, conditions, or institutions.” I can definitely see why most people would not want to associate themselves with one who is radical. They are far too intense!
However, in my opinion, in today’s age when women are constantly treated like objects to men despite our best efforts, perhaps it is time for radical change. America was built upon the words of the founding fathers in our constitution. It’s about time that our mothers have a voice. Even with movements like #MeToo, women’s marches, and a whole month dedicated to women’s history, it seems like these efforts are never enough compared to what women struggle with on a day-to-day basis; Harassment, assault, and even rape.
A phrase we also might know is the phrase “special snowflake”. It is used to categorize people ‘diagnosed’ with the “Special Snowflake Syndrome”. This is defined on Wikipedia as “The conviction that one is, in some way, special and should therefore be treated differently from others.” Radical Feminists who demand real change are labeled as Special Snowflakes because those bystanders believe that feminists are attention-seeking. When in reality, they have real, valid problems that are not easily seen.
Real feminists do not demand women to be better than men. Feminism advocates all to be equal: guys, gals, and even non-binary pals. Yes, it may seem misleading because the word seems like it only advocates for women, but we must educate ourselves and learn to look past that. And yes, feminism might not be for most because it is a radical movement that demands extreme change from the norm. Nonetheless, if you support women’s rights, want equality for all, and like to build people up, then the feminist movement is calling your name. Hop on the bandwagon and enjoy the ride.
