Dear Inez G,
I am 16 years old and I want to start birth control because my period is very irregular and I get very bad cramps, but my parents are anti- contraceptives. On top of that, I've had a steady boyfriend for over a year, and we want to have sex, but do it safely. What do I do?
Thanks,

Dear Anonymous,
Birth control can be a sensitive topic for some parents. However there is a way to get birth control without your parents consent. If you make an appointment with your general doctor or gynecologist, they cannot tell your parents what you talked about because you are over the age of 16 and patient confidentiality. If you choose to talk to your parents again, really emphasize how painful your periods can be. Also, there are other ways to have safe sex with out being on birth control! Male condoms, female condoms, and dental dams can be purchased at your local pharmacy and help prevent infections and pregnancies. If you do wind up going on birth control and having sex, use a condom to prevent STD’s. Keep in mind, no method of contraceptive or birth control is 100% effective. I wish you the best of luck with your parents and staying safe! Lastly, remember the three S’s: strong, savvy, and sincere.
